Tooth Extractions in Hendersonville, NC

When problematic teeth are causing you pain and discomfort, remember that you have options. The goal is always to preserve your natural teeth, but sometimes extractions are the best way to go to save your smile.

Why Would I Need a Tooth Extraction?

Sometimes, a tooth must be removed to maintain good oral health. You might need a tooth extraction if you’re experiencing pain or discomfort associated with the tooth, the tooth is infected or decayed, or there is crowding in your mouth.

The Benefits of Tooth Extractions

Basic Extractions

Basic extractions are designed to remove teeth that are impacted, decayed, or broken and are not restorable. This type of extraction typically involves only the local anesthetic and minimal instrumentation, making the process short and straightforward.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

You may also require a wisdom tooth extraction if your third molars are causing impaction, pain, or infection in your mouth. They differ from regular teeth because they erupt much later in life and can cause overcrowding in your mouth if they don't have enough room to come down properly. In this case, your dentist may recommend removing them to prevent further damage or discomfort.

The Extraction Process

Oral exam

Dr. Valdes and his team will give you a thorough oral exam to assess your condition and determine whether a tooth extraction is necessary. Depending on your specific needs, they may run additional tests to gain a better understanding of the situation.

Preparation

Once Dr. Valdes has determined that an extraction is necessary, he will discuss the procedure options with you and prepare your mouth for the extraction. He will also ensure that all instruments used during the extraction process are sterile and ready.

Sedation

If you're feeling anxious about your tooth extraction due to fear or pain, Dr. Valdes may recommend sedation dentistry to help ease your discomfort during the procedure.

Extraction

Dr. Valdes will use specialized instruments carefully remove any damaged or decayed teeth from your mouth and then suture the area if needed to prevent any potential infection or post-operative complications. He will also provide instructions on handling any residual pain or swelling after the procedure so that you can keep your recovery time as short as possible.

Did you know…

Tooth extractions are among the oldest dental procedures, with evidence of extractions dating back to ancient civilizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tooth extraction recovery process varies depending on the complexity of the extraction. Here is what to expect: After removing the tooth, a blood clot may form in the socket to protect the exposed bone and nerve endings. Some swelling and pain are normal after an extraction. The extraction site generally takes about 1-2 weeks to heal. However, it may take several months for the bone to fill in completely and for the gum tissue to heal fully. Always follow your dentist’s specific instructions for post-extraction care. If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection, contact your dentist immediately.
Tooth extractions should not be overly painful, although you may feel soreness or throbbing afterward. Your Hendersonville dentist will offer sedation to reduce pain and discomfort during the procedure.

Another great experience today at Vibrant Dental! The hygienist was new to me as I had to reschedule my appointment and my current hygienist was booked. I recommend either hygienist, both are friendly and focused on patient care. Had the panoramic Xray which is new to me. It was easy to do & less concerning than the days when they’d lay a heavy vest on you and leave the room!
